How to tell if a microphone is damaged?

Other then trying out the microphone how can someone tell of a microphone is bad. I have been looking on Ebay and craigslist for some microphones but I have no idea if they will work or if they are damaged.

It's tough. There are lots of microphones that work but have wonky problems. Unless you are already familiar with a microphone's sound, they really need to be put into an anechoic chamber with some rather sophisticated test equipment to prove that the mic's characteristics are correct.

What are you looking for? I have some I might sell. No PR40s or RE20s, though.
Please direct all questions for me to the forum so that all can benefit.

I guess the only real way to tell is the sound. Sadly I dont think you can really tell based on the body of the mic. I have 2 mics here that look brand new but there is something wrong with them
