    Recommendation For A Good Preamp

Looking for a good preamp to use, with the new mic I am getting. 20 dB of gain will not work with a SM7B. I've found some ART tube preamps which seem to be highly recommend by many people at a great low cost. What preamp do you use? Would you recommend it? Thanks!

What mixer are you using? I've never seen a mixer with only 20dB of mic gain. Are you sure you have the trim control adjusted correctly? The SM7B works great with Mackie and Behringer mixers.

I would also like to know what board you are using. As far as Preamps go...The DBX 286s is the one to get.

Sorry for such a late reply! Forgot I had this post up on here. I'm using a Alesis Multimix 8 USB FX.

Where did you get the number 20 dB? The preamps on most Alesis have at least 50 dB of gain.

I just need a good preamp for when I get my new mic. 60 dB works best with the SM7B. On my mixer the max on the gain knob shows as 20 dB

You appear to be convinced, so I don't know how to help you. If you must buy a preamp, take a look at the dbx 286s since it has an excellent gate. In reality, though, I'd suggest that you wait until you get all of your equipment in hand before you start buying additional equipment.

I really dont think you need a preamp. When you use your setup where do you set your gain ?
