"Football fever has taken over Tomboy Tirade as the 7th FIFA Women’s World Cup kicks off in Canada from June 6th to July 5th! In our World Cup Special, we are joined by Tameka Butt, Australian professional football midfielder who plays for the Australian Women’s Football Team The Matildas and representing her country in the upcoming World Cup and super fan & women sports advocate Danielle Warby."

This week on Tirade, Persis and Raven find themselves on the same football team as their favourite football star, Tameka, who is represnted by Danielle. Up against vicious opponents who are playing dirty, there’s only one problem. They both play football - badly. How is this going to work out for the zany tomboy duo? a) TICKETS FOR WOMEN’S WORLD CUP FINAL IN VANCOUVER ARE SOLD OUT. - The ticket sales are going strong as the excitement builds up for FIFA Women’s World Cup in June. As of May, 2 matches have been sold out, including the final. Yes, all 48,000 tickets for the July 5 championship at B.C. Place in Vancouver are gone. Eventually, FIFA and Canadian Football Association officials are hoping to reach 1.5 million in ticket sales for the month-long tournament that will showcase matches at six venues from Moncton to Vancouver.

b) THE LINEUP FOR THIS EDITION OF WORLD CUP HAS INCREASED TO 24 TEAMS, FROM THE ORIGINAL 16 - The new debuts include Thailand, Switzerland, Spain, Cameroon, Costa Rica, Ivory Coast, Nederlands and Ecuador.

c) BBC HOLDS ITS FIRST EVER WOMEN FOOTBALLER OF THE YEAR AWARD – This year BBC world service is holding its first ever Women’s Footballer of the Year award. The five nominees are Spain’s Veronica Boquete, Germany’s Nadine Kessler and Scotland’s Kim Little, Brazilian forward Marta and Nigerian youngster Asisat Oshoala. The winner will be revealed on BBC World Service on 26 May after being decided by a public vote.

FIFA WOMEN’S WORLD CUP WINNER PREDICTIONS – The 7th FIFA Women’s World Cup kicks off in Canada from June 6th to July 5th. 24 teams of the best women players from all over the world will compete for the World Cup title. This will be Australia ‘s 6th appearance at the FIFA Women’s World Cup, having only missed the maiden edition in 1991. The national team that is also known as The Westfield Matildas, has twice reached the quarter-finals in 2007 and 2011. The Matildas start their FIFA World Cup campaign against the USA on the 8th of June. Can the Matildas tip World Cup scales against USA, Sweden and Nigeria in the Group of Death?

4. CHALLENGES FACING WOMEN FOOTBALLER AND OTHER PROFESSIONAL SPORTSWOMEN[– Sportswomen face sexism on many turns from close scrutiny of their looks to not getting the respect for what they do. A point which is illustrated by the Women’s World Cup being played on turf, something the male players would never be expected to do.
Sportswomen need more sponsorship and media coverage to make their sport more popular. But media outlets and sponsors would only invest more time and money if women’s sport attracted more interest in the first place. How do we get around this problem and attract more fans to support women’s sport?
