MP2 (MPEG-1, Layer II) is a viable Intermediate audio file format used extensively in Radio/Broadcast due to it's ability to hold up well during multiple instances of encoding and decoding. Besides fidelity retention - lossless files converted to MP2 will be reduced in size by about 75%.

If you're interested in the details - check out my article "Intermediate File Format for New Media Producers."

Otherwise feel free to ping me and I will be happy to share my experience with the use of MP2's. It's a solid option for anyone who moves and stores large audio files.
