    Heck, I remain stuck with USB 2.0 until I 'need' a new computer. This darn 2009 MacPro refuses to die. It still drives all of the new OS 10.9.x. & 10.10, Adobe CC apps, and everything else I throw at it.

    what does this mean for existing usb 3.0 computers? Is this something that upgradable?

    After reading the article, posted by MovieBuff on Macrumors, it would likely be that the cable is backwards compatible with current USB ports, if not the technology that they connect with.

    That is a great question. In terms of whether there is a firmware update to improve transfer speeds in the 3.1 update is a question I do not know how to answer. In terms of using the USB port, you can insert the cable in any top or bottom direction without having to struggle to insert the cable on any existing port, like the lightning cable. It's cross compatible so you can use the cable on your USB ports now.
