There are several USB External Audio Cards out there.
Here's the one I have used with success: Soundblaster X-Fi Pro USB
This should work for you -

Here is another option you could try: http://amzn.to/100ot8l
I had a headphone jack break on a laptop and it saved me a bunch of money rather than having to get the laptop repaired.
My personal Fav. is the Imic. Works great on my Macbook Pro
Imic is ok. I had to send one back. There are a bunch of them and they all do the same thing. Spend as little as you can. there really isnt a big difference between the 5 dollar usb device and the 30 dollar one.
Not True. Its like saying every sound card is the same
I was about to ask that question. Does it work like a soundcard?
Cost does matter. I found these little units to be the best I've used so far. http://goo.gl/imwIc
I also have some $15 units from StarTech and, well, I use them because I didn't have anything else at the time.
The one I recommended is an external soundcard and does quite well. If you are looking for an external card then an option like that is the way to go. If you are looking for a solution to use both connections in the one provided port and use the internal soundcard, then it sounds like some of the other cheaper offerings are definitely the way to go.
Macs don't require soundcards. They just work. Somehow.
To Kinda give you guys an update I ended up buying a few different usb soundcards and i finally settled on the UCA202. Works great
