I have a question for some of you guys that are doing video. Do you think its better to start out semi big with the hardware you are using or should you add on as you continue doing your broadcast. Example is it better to get a Tricaster tc40 or should you keep upgrading and adding.

I had similar thoughts that you are having right now about getting a Tricaster. Leo Laporte makes the Tricaster look like the best device in the world. The tc40 is a very limited box and there is not a lot of room for upgrade. Also when you get a piece of hardware like the Tricaster you cant use webcams and must real camcorders which can cost a lot.
The TC40 is a limited box? No idea when having nearly all the production capabilities of a TV truck in the size of a MATX PC became limited. If you've got the budget, the TriCaster 40 is a simply excellent option, and infact it is possible to bring in webcams and any DirectShow video source via the Network inputs as well as Apple Airplay devices! If anyone has any questions please don't hesitate to ask.
One big limitation of the TC40 is that it's analog in. Given how inexpensive HDMI and even HD-SDI in is these days, they should've made a slightly more expensive version with digital inputs. It also doesn't have individual camera ISO recording that the higher end Tricasters have. The Matrox VS4 Video In card is $1500 has HD-SDI in and can ISO record each camera. There are all in one systems that include that card that don't cost much more than the TC40. TC40 has many of the nice Newtek graphics though.
