How is he able to format his OnAir Hangout this way? Is there something new that will allow for more of a broadcast look without all of the boxes at the bottom of the screen? I just came across this so I don't know much about his show.

I am pretty sure he is using wire cast, vid blaster, or even cam twist. I haven't tried it exactly how he is doing it but my educated guess is that he is capturing sections of his desktop and then using them as "virtual cameras". It's not too hard to do but a switching nightmare, lol.

Yup we have done the same. We just screen grab the main video and use that

So, it turns out this is a new, (new to me anyway), feature with Hangouts called Cameraman, that is basically a switch that allows you to select who is shown in the broadcast, rather than showing a row of people at the bottom of the screen. This is awesome, in my opinion, because it allows you to solo broadcast and take up the full player, rather than it be formatted with the row at the bottom. Sorry if this is already general knowledge; I tend to be the last to know about these things.

Google+ logo in top left indicates its not a screen cap. Good info, Chris!

He is still capturing areas of his screen before sending directly to Google+ Hangouts.

There is an extension for Firefox called Download Helper (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/video-downloadhelper/?src=ss) than will help you download YouTube videos, and flash videos from other web sites as well. Not sure if they have the same extension for other browsers or not. If you're a fan of Greasemonkey you can use this script (http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/159486) to add a button to download videos from YouTube. I imagine it would also work with Chrome.

Also in your YouTube "Video Manager" there is a way to download an mp4 version of the file.

Yes. Both of the tools I mentioned above will show every type of format that is available to download, whether its the mobile version, 480p, webm, 720p, flv, mp4, etc.

Does anyone think that Google is recording the video at a higher quality for a later update? Or do you think it's...what you see is what you get until we decide to up the resolution?

I don't think that they would be recording high quality and not letting viewers see it. But I do believe that its only a matter of time before we see higher quality video.
