I am having trouble finding a happy medium between good video resolution and the upload times for my show. My show is about a half an hour and if I use the higher resolutions it takes 6 or 7 hours to upload but I dont want to lose too much video quality. Thoughts?

Hey Eric,

what resolution are you recording your show at. Also what service are you trying to upload it to ?

Well...I was recording it at a low resolution...I cant remember the exact number. Then I tried 1280 by 720 and that would've taken 7 hours to upload to youtube. So Tom Sinclair and I chatted on the phone last night and he suggested 864 X 480 at 25 frames per second. So I am headed to my web studio today to try some recordings to see how it goes. What would you suggest? Oh....I am using YouTube for now but am open to other suggestions.

Eric, you may need to convert your file to a different format. I was having similar problems until I found a happy medium. It still takes ages to upload the file though. As a file conversion program look at Format Factory (http://www.pcfreetime.com/). I have tried a number but this is simple to use and does a great job.

The next thing to look at is your upload entiltlement from your ISP. Often those are throttled as well as being asynchronous. You may need to change your plan to a higher/faster upload quota. If you are on ASDL2 you may wish to ask about Annex M support which increases the maximum potential upload speed on an ADSL2+ service from 1 Mbps to 2.5 Mbps

Finally, use an FTP client rather than the CDN's upload tool. CuteFTP (http://www.google.com.au/aclk?sa=l&ai=Cu8905YfwUOiQMcW3lAXt9YGIA5beyPIBvM-MgjTSwe0VCAAQASDXwt4DUM7k9LwBYKXAo4CkAaABtLyT_wPIA QGqBBtP0Gpdcfc1gUS-8N9azPoyeosbMEBE4FgCBOiABZBOgAe0w2w&sig=AOD64_2XCtFNJ364arV2ZbD0Rm506CxA-w&ved=0CC4Q0Qw&adurl=http://www.cuteftp.com/trial.aspx/ftp_clients.aspx%3FCMP%3DKNC-Google_CuteFTP&rct=j&frm=1&q=CuteFTP)or CoffeCup FTP (http://www.google.com.au/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&frm=1&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&ved=0CDAQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.coffeecup.com%2Ffree-ftp%2F&ei=OojwUKjqGMKHlAWdvYHoDw&usg=AFQjCNFKaq0ff6R4PSMu7S7-C_1ALfdajA) free are good options. (I use Coffe Cup)

YouTube does not appear to allow FTP, however I have found mention of SFTP via Dropbox. From what I can see the idea is that you create a dropbox which is read as a Youtube content directory, and you then use the FTP client to upload to that. This artice mentions Filezilla, another FTP client. (http://support.google.com/youtube/bin/answer.py?hl=en-GB&answer=173675) . Hopefully someone else on the forum has experimented with this and will share experiences. It seems that you may need to be a YouTube partner to use this method.

Yup Andrew is correct. We record our shows at 720p @10mbps then edit and convert it down to 2mbps.

My shows are about 60 minutes at 864x480 @ 25 fps as Eric said. The show is recorded in WMV format with a file size of 1 to 1.5 GB per show. It takes about 30 minutes to upload this to YouTube (5Mbps upload speed) and then another 20-30 minutes for YouTube to process. The YouTube video is not bad, not GFQ quality, but not too bad.

You can see a recent one here... (adjust the YT settings to 480 for best quality)

AndrewZ: How do you down convert your shows to 2 mbps? What do you use to do that?

Hey Eric,

I do all of the editing and post production for GFQ. It's quite a complicated process. If you aren't doing any post-recording editing, then the method we use wouldn't be ideal for your situation. I would suggest if your only goal is to compress the video down to 2Mbps, is to use a program such as the aforementioned Format Factory or Freemake, where you can input your video and select what settings you'd like to output.

Also, I think sometimes YouTube just has bad days. There are times when I am uploading to YouTube and it just takes way longer to upload than it should based on my upload bandwidth. Usually I just leave it and go do something else when it does that.

If you are interested in the more complicated method, check out this thread (http://forum.ibroadcastnetwork.org/showthread.php/338-Encoding-methods-for-your-video-podcast) which has a lot of useful information, and especially this link (http://www.bubblevision.com/underwater-video/Vegas-YouTube-Vimeo.htm) which you'll find in the same thread.
