They are both great Microphones. At times it comes down to how you sound on that mic

Well I had an issue with the RE20. It really didnt sound good. it was really cold sounding to me. I dont know if thats normal or it was the mic I was using

I love my RE20s! Check out this video discussing the RE20 and RE27:

The RE20 and the RE27 have different elements. The RE27 is 6 dB hotter and has a different sound.

Dahalabit, if your RE20 was ever used as a bass drum mic in a recording studio, it may be shot. Lots of them have been abused. An RE20 in new condition sounds great, but it's only one link in the chain.

Just curious did you buy the RE20 second hand? Many of the ones being sold on ebay and Craigslist are banged up

I did a comparison of the RE320, the PR40, and the Sure SM58 http://schoolofpodcasting.com/is-the-heil-pr40-microphone-really-that-good/

Dated thread response but its slow, so what the heck...

Okay, I'm new as well but I can say that I struggled with the same issue. In fact, I'm talking on the PR40 right now using Dragon Dictate for the Mac. Earlier I was also using it while the TV was blaring less than 20 feet away so the proximity seems very good in this regard. My voice in the headphones is very clear, articulate, and without any exaggerated sounding tone. Still, I don't have another quality mic to compare it with, so I ordered the RE20. When it arrives I'll do the same test in a quiet room and then with TV in the background.

*UPDATE: 9/02/2013
After 6-weeks with the RE20 I can say that it proved to be a significant improvement over the PR40 for my voice. As others have mentioned, it's completely subjective although the improvement in tone and presence is quite significant. I hate using this cliche' but 'your mileage may vary'.

All great advice, especially if you have the budget for the "Gold Standard," which is the RE20. However, Rode has a great alternative which is what I would call a cross between the RE20 and the PR40, called the "Procaster." The big hook on this one, other than the sound, is the price. You can purchase the Procaster with a shockmount and boom currently for $367 on Amazon. (http://www.amazon.com/Rode-Procaster-Broadcast-Dynamic-Microphone/dp/B001IPUJJI)But to compare the sound Click Here (http://www.newmediagear.com/broadcast-mic-wars-rode-procaster-vs-electro-voice-re-20/) for this mic comparison. One other good feature that the Procaster has in common with the RE20 is the proximity, unlike the PR40, which requires you to be much closer and is less forgiving with proximity... but that's great for noise rejection. Of course, so many other things will effect the quality, but your environment will dictate most of your issues.

The best advice I can give someone is to try the mic before you buy it. Everyones experience will be different. I sound awful on a RE20 but great on an SM7. I have heard the opposite from many other people.

Perhaps I was lucky or I just like hearing myself talk as I felt that I sounded good on the PR40 and the RE20. The PR40 was a lot brighter by comparison but not in a bad way. At the time I couldn't justify both so I returned the Heil, but in hindsight I wish I had kept both and just skipped Starbucks for a few days.

Update: As it stands I'm interested in trying the Se Electronics RN17. Yeah I know, but still.

Has anyone else here used the Rode Procaster? what did you think of it?
