Hi Im going to be launching my new site on July 1st with some Audio and Video podcasts whats the best Way to cheaply host the audio and video files. I am going to be using Squarespace for the site.

I personally don't like the limitations of squarespace. I would go with Wordpress. If you are looking for unlimited hosting and unlimited storage I hate to say it but Godaddy is one of the few that offers it

For the video hosting I would consider using Blip.TV, it does have some limitations (like a 1GB file limit) but gives an reasonable service for the price (free or minimal cost). For Audio LibSyn is a good way to go and they have some reasonable pricing models. Not on LibSyn the storage you see on the pricing models is the upload per month NOT the total storage, so your storage grows month by month.

As I'm sure it has been stated somewhere on here before, you do NOT want to use your hosting to also serve up your audio and/or video files. Most shared hosting providers frown upon that and will shut your site down.

I personally use CloudFront with S3 on Amazon to serve up my audio files and use a combination of Podtrac and Bluebrry (depending on the show) to track my stats. I also use Wordpress, which I feel is the very best way to go for content creation and Internet broadcasting, if for nothing more than the PowerPress plugin that is is used to play your media files AND creates a very good RSS feed specifically for your shows.

Right ! I post all the audio in MP3 format on the website so that people could download it. Even though I am the ISP, I won't dream on posting the video on any of our servers though :-) I have more than enough bandwidth and CPU power to support all of my customers with fast execution, and wouldn't want to lower that. I leave my Video on Bambuser.

Currently I am hosting Audio via Amazon S3. Video is a relatively new addition to our once all audio uploads. I have been using YouTube while I seek out alternatives. Blip.tv seems like a good idea, minus the 1GB limit. I have also thought of hosting on S3 and using the Sublime Video Player; however, paying for a player to not show ads even though they don't physically host the player seems to be a drawback as well.

So I may have to use YouTube for a bit until I come up with a better solution or just go all in with S3 (not expensive now, but who knows what the costs will rise up to with more and more traction on views).

I would think so. It's just a redirect that passes a tracking link through Podtrac that links to the actual file. I've used both Podtrac and Blubrry to track downloads at the same time to see if they tracked the same way. I'm assuming, of course, that you're using Powerpress for Wordpress.

I know i might be the exception to the rule, but I host all of my audio and video through my hosting provider, hostgator.com. I have been with them for over four years, and have pulled over 500 gigs of bandwith daily, and they have not sent me one email, warning, or throttled me back.

There only rule is that you do not tax the server CPU wise. So basically what that means is, you need a well-designed website, caching helps, to keep the CPU cycles low.

I wish I could afford a dedicated file hosting provider, but I'm not making the money doing this to afford that.

Like Chase, I host our show audio on our web hosting server too. We don't do any video. We have about 6 GB worth of shows on there. We haven't gotten any warnings or anything. The only downside to doing it that way is if you ever move to another service, you got a lot of uploading to do the longer your show goes on.

Eventually, I'd like to get a separate media host. Most likely through Blubrry. But it all comes down to budget.
