Vimeo has acquired Cameo, a mobile video app that allows users to shoot, edit, and share visually-appealing videos.

Cameo fits into Vimeo’s model of high-quality video content. The app offers various visual themes inspired by movies and music videos. Editing features include the ability to add things such as video overlays, title cards, and custom fonts. Once shared, the videos are stored on Cameo’s cloud-based network.

The app was launched by the trio of Matthew Rosenberg, Michael Constantiner, and Andy Thompson in October 2013. Three months later, it was awarded Apple’s Editor’s Choice and the iTunes “Best of 2013” in the video category.

“Vimeo is committed to empowering all creators, and the ubiquity of HD camera phones is driving the largest wave of video creation ever seen,” said Kerry Trainor, CEO Vimeo. “What we love about Cameo is that it gives even novice video-makers the power to create beautiful, well-crafted videos.”

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, though it appears to be an “acqui-hire.” Per the announcement, the Cameo team will now report to Vimeo CTO Andrew Pile, and Rosenberg will transition from his role as CEO of Cameo to VP, Cameo. Cameo will continue to operate as a standalone app. (Patel)
