Hey guys, I wanted to know how you guys recorded your shows? Has anyone every done so with Adobe Flash Media Encoder? Is there any outside software you can use to record live video? Thanks!

Jake,

I have used FMLE to record with mixed success. But it really depends on what you want to with the recording. Archive? Upload?

As a VidBlaster user, I use it to record all of my broadcasts. One of the latest betas has a MPEG recorder feature, pretty sweet. It will also record FLV, MOV and WMV, as well as AVI uncompressed.

I generally use the WMV. A broadcast of about 90 minutes is about a 3gig file.

Hey Jake.

I also use Vidblaster to record the show. each show is recorded at 10mbps and is a WMV File.

In Wirecast i have 2 recordings simultaneously recording:

Recording for post production:
ProRes LT @ VBR to 105Mbps
854x480 resolution
25FPS
48Khz mono audio - 16 bit integer uncompressed

Recording for instant podcast/archive:
H.264 @ 2Mbps
854x480 resolution
25FPS
48Khz mono audio - MPEG 4 audio @ 128K

I use FMLE to stream to a FMS... I've had fairly good success with it. I DO want to upgrade my capture card so that I can switch over to Wirecast though... being able to add content to my stream from my desktop is looking REALLY good.

Using Wirecast on Mac, I usually record either in Apple ProRes LT or Apple Intermediate Codec at 1280x720 29.97fps. Audio is PCM Stereo at 48kHz.

Wirecast recording software is very good. You have more options with file format and size then Vidlbaster. We will be starting to use Wirecast as an encoding machine in a few weeks.

I use Wirecast to record shows. I like it how you can start & stop recording on the fly.

I use Xsplit broadcaster for all my shows. I think xsplit is great although a bit buggy but it is only in 1.0. It's affordable too.

I'd forgotten about recording with XSplit. That may meet my needs. If not, I'll need to get Amnon or Tom to show me Vidblaster or Joe de Max to show me Wirecast. I'm WAY behind!!

Wirecast is simple, once you find the best mix..
.wmv or flash.........

I used .wmv first, but now i'm doing flash..
for some reasons on one PC .wmv works perfect and on the other, i have to use flash (.mp4) in order to get a good clean recording

Flash refers to a number of codecs.
H.264 .mp4 (there are other .mp4 codecs) is more efficient (better quality relative to the bit rate) than WMV. Microsoft has been moving towards H.264 .mp4. Microsoft Expression Encoder paid version encodes to it (free version only WMV). Windows Media Player 12 supports its playback natively. Microsoft Silverlight supports H.264 .mp4 (which is one reason why I wouldn't refer to the codec as "Flash") as well as Apple and it's part of the HTML5 spec (along with WebM).

The advantage that WMV has over H.264 .mp4 is that generally WMV is easier to decode so older or weaker systems may handle it better. One can use H.264 .mp4 Baseline rather than Main Profile for easier decoding though. You'll find Baseline more widely supported on smartphones and tablets or more recent ones can handle Main Profile and, in some cases, even High Profile.

The encoder can have an impact on H.264 .mp4 encoding quality though. Whereas WMV encoding is based on Microsoft SDK for third party products that support it, H.264 encoders come from a variety of developers. MainConcept is probably the most common used by Adobe as well as Wirecast (and VidBlaster?) but these days it seems x264 has taken the lead in quality testing. One of the worst seems to be Apple's H.264.
