I was having a discussion with few internet broadcasters the other day and we started talking about the best investment we have made for our setup. For GFQ I can easily say that it was the DBX 286 Mic Preamp Processor/ Gate Limiter (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004LWH79A/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B004LWH79A&linkCode=as2&tag=thgufrquponet-20).

The gating alone has totally changed the quality of my audio.

What would you say is the best thing you have bought for your podcast?

I also bought a DBX 286 because of Mike Phillips... The fact that its under 200 bucks is crazy this thing is amazing.

Probably my Macbook Pro retina. I needed a good laptop to help with recording my podcast and never had a mac before. Love it!

I don't actually have a podcast yet but of the gear I purchased so far I like my Electro-Voice RE20 the best. Of course it's still early in the week so I may have a new favorite piece of gear in a few days.

By far, Wirecast. It's fantastic.

I'd have to say my MDX 2600, Zoom H2 and my ATR 2100 (thanks Mike Phillips) the most and my Sony A57 SLR as a close second. May sell the MDX 2600 and get the DBX. Been on the fence about that.

I am sure once we do video I'll add my cameras to this list.

the Heil PR-40 ... It is a great microphone.

Yes, that PR40 is a very good sounding mic although it's a tad bright for my taste, or at least with my voice. Oh well, why have one mic when you can have two.

Update: I ended up ordering a different mic pre as I wasn't really happy with the dbx 286s. Yeah I know, 'it's the best mic pre out there, especially for the price' but I'm just finicky I suppose.

The RE20 sounds good for you spencer, however, they do not sound great for everyone.

I sound awful on the RE 20. I would rather use a SM7

To be honest, I have no idea if I would sound better on another mic.:) When I built my studio in 2008 my engineer suggested the RE20...I was like "ok.":) I've worked in stations that used Neumann's, Shure SM7B's, etc. I think I sound basically the same. You can make them all work for you in my opinion.

I too agree that Spencer's voice sounds good with the RE20. Then again, his studio appears fully treated so I'm sure that has an influence combined with the right 'pre' adjustments.

In fact, most every microphone I've heard so far sounds pretty darn good with only one exception. It was some guy using a headworn mic that sounded like the opening announcer from the Beatles 'Magical Mystery Tour'.
