I've been carefully looking at the Steinberg UR28M Audio Interface and the sound quality is amazing. Now, I'm trying to get my mind set. I was looking at buying a mixer around $400. This pre-amp interface device is similarly priced and I'm thinking with all the I/O options and the Cube software I could skip the mixer.

It looks to me like one heck of a sound card with alot of flexibility. I've been taking a run at the youtube videos and I'm not finding anything that helpful as far as podcasting. There appear to be alot of live small performers that really have good things to say about it.

There is also a video on the above linked page you can view.

If this puppy will work in podcast environment it may take me into a new century. Yes, there will be wires out the back of the unit, but nothing on the top and the unit is attractive and reasonable size. I also really like the small size, because I can use it at remote sites easily with my laptop.

I'm not trying selling anyone on this. Just trying to encourage some feedback, because I am seriously thinking of buying one.

I'd appreciate to read any feedback on UR28M, especially if you have experience with it or the UR824

Also, I'm new to podcasting. Maybe there are some older more involved forums I should look into. I would appreciate any links.

It seems pretty limited as far as inputs. How many Microphones are you looking to connect? Are you looking to do any skype call ins?

I am thinking for the most part two mics in, most of the time 1 mic.

Yes, Skype immediately and direct call ins at some point in the future.

Yes. plan to have music and broadcast jingles, etc.

Yes, plan to use a broadcast software after I understand podcasting better.

You might want to go back and check out the unit a bit more. I think there are plenty of inputs for what I'm looking to do. It appears from what I understand the cubase software interacts with the unit and it has alot more possibilities than it might appear.

I like the small size and from the sound samples it is terrific.

Does it have an Aux send or can it do Mix Minus in the software?

I will have to contact Steinberg support for that answer, because the literature doesn't mention the above.

I was thinking this might be controlled from the cubase software setups.

Still, it needs to be answered before I buy it.

Thanks for responding

Here is the operation manual. If you can make sense out of it. I cannot get an answer from Steinberg, and I understand that could take awhile unless I can find another source for the information. I will read the manual of course, but I'm not sure I'll grasp it, since I'm so new to broadcasting.

This is the response I got from Steinberg support -> The DSP mixer function for UR28M does not include an Aux send or Mix Minus functionality. The mixer does have 3 sets of stereo outputs, so you could use the 1st set as a master, the 2nd set as an aux, and the 3rd set as an alternate mix. I hope this information is helpful.

Does this look workable to you?

The jargon for audio production is very new to me, so I'm basically lost alot. LOL

It is a great device, but I would opt to use a normal mixer with plenty of aux sends and channel inputs. You can get some inexpensive ones such as the Behringer XENYX X2442USB or X2222USB. You will soon find a use for the extra channels.

Please do a search on this forum for mix-minus and checkout Mike Phillip's site www.mikephillips.me

This is a simple, and quite effective, post on setting up a mix-minus. http://theaudacitytopodcast.com/tap044-how-to-live-stream-and-record-a-podcast-with-others/

I would agree with Andrew. I think a "standard" mixer gives you the most band for your buck. the mackie 1402 VLZ3 is my fav suggest to people. You also get two aux sends with it.
